ajagararūpadvijakṛtaṃ rudrastotram (Ajagararupadvijakritam Rudra Stotram)

(Ajagararupadvijakritam-rudra-stotram in English (IAST))

From Bhavishya Purana

Also known as ajagara rupa dvija rudra stotram · bhavishya purana rudra stotram · nagesha stotram

From the Bhavishya Purana, and spoken by a brahmin who has taken the form of a python — the frame is odd and the content odder, because this is a hymn built out of grammar. The first verse describes the highest as light without form, unmanifest, eternal bliss, and then says it became threefold, divided by the unity of the three genders: the masculine has the nature of sattva, the feminine the nature of rajas, and what remains of the two is of the nature of tamas. The second works the same scheme through time — rajas first, the man in the middle as sattva, the neuter last like tamas — and closes on the salutation the whole piece is addressed to, lord of serpents. It is a piece of speculative theology in the shape of a stotra.
