दीपावलीDiwali

Also called Deepavali · Lakshmi Puja · Dhanteras · Deepawali

The row of lamps, and the night the house is opened and lit for the Goddess of fortune to enter it.

When it falls

The new-moon tithi of Kārtika for Lakṣmī Pūjā, in a sequence running from Dhanteras on the thirteenth of the dark fortnight through Naraka Chaturdaśī, Govardhana Pūjā and Bhāī Dūj.

The tithi, not a date — the calendar date is a pañchāṅga reckoning and differs by region. Check your local pañchāṅga for this year.

The Reading

The Śrī Sūktam at the pūjā, the Kanakadhārā — Śaṅkara’s hymn that rained gold into an empty house — and the Mahālakṣmī Aṣṭakam. Dhanteras carries the Dhanvantari mantra with it.
