श्रीकृष्ण जन्माष्टमीKrishna Janmashtami

Also called Janmashtami · Gokulashtami · Krishna Jayanti · Dahi Handi

A fast held through the day and broken at midnight, when the cradle is rocked and the child is bathed.

When it falls

The eighth tithi of the dark fortnight of Bhādrapada, kept until midnight — the hour of the birth in the prison at Mathurā.

The tithi, not a date — the calendar date is a pañchāṅga reckoning and differs by region. Check your local pañchāṅga for this year.

The Reading

The Madhurāṣṭakam and the Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam through the evening; the tenth Canto of the Bhāgavatam, which is the birth itself, read at the hour.
