महाशिवरात्रिMaha Shivaratri

Also called Mahashivratri · Shivratri · Shivaratri

A night kept awake, in four watches, with the abhiṣeka of the liṅga at each — water, milk, curd and honey — and bilva leaves offered through all of them.

When it falls

The fourteenth tithi of the dark fortnight of Phālguna — the great night of Śiva. A Śivarātri falls in the dark fortnight of every month; this is the one called great.

The tithi, not a date — the calendar date is a pañchāṅga reckoning and differs by region. Check your local pañchāṅga for this year.

The Reading

The Rudram is chanted at the abhiṣeka. Between the watches come the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya, the Liṅgāṣṭakam, the Bilvāṣṭakam and, at the turn of the night, the Śiva Tāṇḍava Stotram.
