Lord Dattatreya

śrī dattātreya kavacam

(Sri Dattatreya Kavacham in English (IAST))

Vasudevananda Saraswati

Also known as shri dattatreya kavacham · shree dattatreya kavacham · dattatreya kavacham

An armour by Vāsudevānanda Sarasvatī, working upward over the body and giving each part to a different aspect of the god. Śrīpāda guards the feet, the one seated in siddhāsana the thighs, the sky-clad the private parts, Nṛhari the waist; the maker of the world guards the navel and the six-armed one the arms; the hands are given to him who holds rosary, water-pot, trident, drum, conch and discus; the tongue to the speech of the Veda, the eyes to the divine sight, the nose to the self that is scent, the ears to him whose fame is worth hearing, the forehead to the swan-self, the head to the wearer of matted hair. It then covers what is not the body at all — wealth, grain, house, field, wife, sons, cattle, servants and kin — and finally the joins of day and night, the hours when the tradition holds a man least protected.
