oṃ asato mā sadgamaya

(Asato Ma Sadgamaya in English (IAST))

Also known as tamaso ma jyotirgamaya

This powerful verse from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.3.28) is a Pavamāna Mantra or purifying chant to dissolve the seeker’s false identification with body-mind, and recognise one’s true nature as the eternal, limitless and omniscient Self. It is a heartfelt prayer seeking liberation from the illusions of life. The devotee asks to be led from ignorance (asat, darkness, and death) to enlightenment (sat or truth, light, and immortality). "Asato Mā Sadgamaya" means "Lead me from unreality to reality." This profound invocation addresses the fundamental Vedantic distinction between the transient (Asat - unreal) and the eternal (Sat - reality).
