Goddess Bhuvaneshwari

śrī bhuvaneśvaryaṣṭakam

(Shri Bhuvaneshvari Ashtakam in English (IAST))

Also known as sri bhuvaneshvari ashtakam · shree bhuvaneshvari ashtakam · bhuvaneshvari ashtakam

Eight verses in which almost nothing changes. After an opening that places her on the bank of the Krishna as a wish-tree for her devotees, every verse closes on the same line — Bhuvaneshvari, Mahakali, giver of what the mind longs for — and each supplies only one new half-line above it. She gives every attainment, and enjoyment and release both; she gives freedom from all fear and destroys everything wicked; she takes away every affliction and her own form is Mahavishnu's; she stands everywhere as the inner ruler of all; she both ends becoming and is the medicine for it; she destroys the film of ignorance. The construction makes it a litany rather than a poem, which is what it is for, and the two names joined in the refrain quietly identify the gentle Mahavidya with the fierce one.
