অম্ভস্যপারে ভুবনস্য মধ্যে

(Ambhasyapare Bhuvanasya Madhye in Bengali)

Also known as ambhasyapare bhuvanasya madhye nakasya prsthe mahato

A single Vedic verse, and one of the oldest statements in the tradition of where the creator is to be looked for. In the far shore of the waters, in the middle of the world, on the back of the firmament — greater than the great — having entered the lights by means of the bright one, Prajapati moves within the womb. Every clause of it is a location, and the locations do not agree with one another: an unreachable edge of water, a centre, a surface above the sky, and then an inside. The last word settles it by refusing to settle it, since the one who contains everything is said to be moving about within a womb. It is recited on its own as an invocation rather than as part of a longer hymn, which is why it stands here as a single line.
