Lord Mangala

śrī aṃgāraka stotram

(Sri Amgaraka Stotram in English (IAST))

Also known as sri angaraka mangal stotram · shri amgaraka stotram · shree amgaraka stotram

A short list of Mars's names, and it is worth reading beside the debt-cancelling stotra in the same cluster, because the two share verses and diverge in one telling place. This one names Virupangiras as its seer and gives Agni as the deity of the mantra rather than Mangala, which is an older stratum showing through, since the planet is the burning coal. The names themselves are frank about how double-edged he is: he takes away debt and he takes away wealth; he makes disease and he destroys disease; he causes wounds; and he fulfils desire. Around those sit the plainer ones — bearer of the spear, red-limbed, son of the earth, the youth, great-bodied, giver of wealth, lightning-bright, fond of the singing of the Saman, red-clothed and red-eyed, and the one who makes every action understood.
