One of two lists of a hundred and eight names for this goddess in the corpus, and the two are built on opposite principles. This one, from the Rudrayamala, works by identification: the names spend their length saying that she is the other goddesses. Mahalakshmi, Tripurasundari, Bhuvaneshi, Parvati, Lalita, Bhairavi, Annapurna, Varahi, Chinnamasta, Tara, Kali, Sarasvati, Matangi, and then the form of Brahma, the form of Vishnu, the form of Rudra and the power of Rudra. Two short runs interrupt that. One is the yellow sequence which gives her the name Pitambara: clothed in yellow, yellow-flowered, fond of yellow garments, fond of yellow scent, worshipped with yellow gems. The other is the run she is actually known for, the arresting names, she who is arrest itself and who brings the wicked to a standstill. It opens by calling her the form of the brahmastra.
