ଶ୍ରୀ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରମୌଲୀଶ୍ଵର ସ୍ତଵଃ

A hymn to Śiva as Candramaulīśvara, the lord who wears the moon on his crest, from the Śivarahasya, where it is spoken by the gaṇas. Despite the name it has nothing to do with the planet, and its subject is not the crescent but non-duality. Every verse ends on the same line — we take refuge in Śrī Candramaulīśvara — and the verses before it are almost all Upaniṣadic: you in whom all this world shines and who are not other than the whole expanse, present as oil is present in sesame; whom the scriptures do not see though it stands at the head, as people do not see the thing on their own head; smaller than the small and greater than the great, the self set in the cave of this creature; the witness of all, shining beyond darkness, by whose light everything shines. Only the last verse turns to the figure, on the ridge of Kailāsa with the mountain's daughter.
