Lord Dattatreya

śrī dattātreya cinmayāṣṭakam

(Sri Dattatreya Chinmaya Ashtakam in English (IAST))

Also known as shri dattatreya chinmaya ashtakam · shree dattatreya chinmaya ashtakam · dattatreya chinmaya ashtakam

Eight verses that each end on the same phrase — cinmayaṃ praṇamāmy aham, I bow to the one made of consciousness — and build up the figure a little at a time. He is the child-form with the laughing face, holding conch and discus, the cow beside him and the trident in his hand; six-armed, fond of praise, made of the three qualities, the ferry across becoming; pleased by the chanting of Oṁ and worshipped with lotuses that are Oṁ; like ten million suns; the true guru and the guru of gurus; mover of the world's play, reachable by knowledge, without qualities, and taking birth for no reason except his devotees. The eighth breaks the pattern deliberately. Instead of bowing it addresses him directly as father, mother, kinsman and friend, and then abandons description altogether: come, come, you who go to whoever remembers you — appear.
