(Sri Devasena Ashtottara Shatanamavali in English (IAST))

A hundred and eight names of Devasena, who is Kartikeya's wife and, as her name says, the army of the gods personified — so the list keeps sliding between a person and a force. It opens conventionally enough with the yellow-clothed one, the divine one, the holder of the blue lotus; and then immediately gives her Animan, the first of the eight yogic powers, as a name of her own. What follows takes in Mahadevi and Karalini and the one with flame for eyes, Mahalakshmi and Varahi, so the consort of the war-god is addressed with the vocabulary of the great goddesses. It closes on a short run that is unusually plain after all that: protector of those who have come for refuge, the heart of everything, goddess, mistress of all, the accomplished one, Lakshmi.
