Lord Krishna (Jagannatha)

श्री जगन्नाथ पञ्चकम्

(Sri Jagannatha Panchakam)

Also known as shri jagannatha panchakam · shree jagannatha panchakam · jagannatha panchakam

Five long verses on the Puri image, taking the temple's own iconography in order. The first three praise Jagannatha alone — eyes that break the red lotus's pride, a gold crown with pearl strings hanging from it, gem-bright earrings, a body blue as a monsoon cloud, the discus-bearer at his side; an ocean of compassion; the wish-gem found in the sea of anxiety; the crest-jewel of the Blue Mountain. The fourth sets out the whole shrine at once: on the Blue Mountain, in the middle of the conch, on a hundred-petalled lotus and a jewelled lion-throne, with his elder brother beside him and the chariot-wheel with Bhadra at the left. The fifth turns entirely to Balarama — plough and pestle in the arms, unsteady with wine, bright with the serpent-lord's hood, white as the moon — and worships him under the name Kamapala.
