Sixteen names of Śanaiścara in two verses, with a single verse of fruit after them, and the selection is more interesting than its length suggests. Alongside the expected ones — Koṇa, Śanaiścara, Manda, delight of Chāyā's heart, born of Mārtaṇḍa, Sauri, Pātaṅgi, lord of the house — it keeps three that most lists leave out. He is called abrāhmaṇa, the one outside brahminhood; krūrakarman, whose work is harsh; and then, in the same breath, dharmānuja, the younger brother of Dharma, which is Yama, and śānta, the quiet one. Setting the harsh names beside the peaceful without comment is how these texts handle him. The closing verse asks for nothing but a change of disposition: whoever reads these sixteen names day after day, the lord becomes well pleased with him even when standing in an adverse place.
