Lord Surya

श्री सूर्यार्या स्तोत्रम् (याज्ञवल्क्य कृतम्)

(Sri Suryarya Stotram)

Sage Yajnavalkya

Also known as suryarya stotram yajnavalkya · surya arya stotra · yajnavalkya surya stotram

Verses in the āryā metre attributed to Yājñavalkya, the hymn being named for its metre rather than for its subject. The images are compact and almost entirely visual: the risen disc like an earring on the ear of Indra's quarter, the ornament of the eastern mountain, the crest-jewel of the sky. In one verse the three-eyed one himself — whose feet the crowns of the gods rub against — folds his hands at the Sun's rising and at his setting. In another the whole world closes like a bud when he goes down and opens like a lotus when he comes up, and in the last the seven horses swim across the ocean like a handful of scattered flowers. Its own phalaśruti counts seven āryās rather than the nine given here, and says they fell from the sky at Sāmbapura: kept in the throat or in the house, they are a treasury for the poor and the best medicine for the sick.
