śrī vallī aṣṭottaraśatanāmāvalī (108 Names)
(Sri Valli Ashtottara Shatanamavali in English (IAST))
Also known as shri valli ashtottara shatanamavali · shree valli ashtottara shatanamavali · valli ashtottara shatanamavali
A hundred and eight names of Valli, the hill woman Murugan married, and the list keeps her double origin visible. She is Mahavalli and dark-bodied, ornamented all over, in yellow cloth — and then, in the fifth name, the daughter of the moon, which belongs to the account in which she was born of a doe and raised among the Veddas. Another early name calls her of human form, which is the sort of thing said only about someone whose humanity is in question. What follows gives her the consort-goddess vocabulary, the lotus-holder and the divine one, so the archana addresses a tribal girl and a goddess in the same breath without remarking on it. It is performed at the Murugan shrines beside the corresponding list for Devasena, his other wife.
