Lord Chandra

candrastotram 2 (niṣākarastotram)

(Candrastotram 2 Nisakarastotram in English (IAST))

Also known as chandra stotram 2 · candrastotra 2 nisakarastotra · svetambaranvitavapurvarasubhravarnam svetasvayuktarathagam surasevitanghrim

The second of the Candra hymns, known also as the Niśākara Stotra, and the one that fixes the iconography most exactly. Its meditation gives him a body in white cloth, of fine bright colour, riding a chariot drawn by white horses, with mace and the gesture of safety in his two hands and the Śrīvatsa and a pearl worn on him. The verses that follow are unusually technical, placing him in the southeastern quarter of the diagram with a ten-horsed chariot, facing west upon a four-cornered seat. Two consecutive verses then give two different conventions without reconciling them — four-armed, bright with armlet and crown, the eye of Vāsudeva and the ornament of Śaṅkara, and then two-armed, robed and garlanded and anointed all in white. It ends by naming precisely what the recitation is set against: consumption, the falling sickness, skin disease, and burning fever.
