chandas Gāyatrī, 3 pādas of 8 syllables
सवितुः of Savitā, the sun — Savitā is the sun taken as the one who sets everything moving. What the verse asks for is that light at work in the mind.
भर्गः the light — Bhargas is the sun's burning brightness. Commentators read it as the light that burns away what is unclean in the one who meditates.
धीमहि we take in, we meditate on — A Vedic form. It carries both taking something in and holding it in thought.
भूः भुवः स्वः earth, mid-air, heaven — The three vyāhṛtis. They are placed before the verse for recitation and are not part of the Rig Vedic verse itself.
note Rig Veda 3.62.10, seen by Viśvāmitra. ॐ and the three vyāhṛtis are added in front when it is recited. वरेण्यं is sung as va-re-ṇi-yaṃ so that the pāda comes to eight syllables.
