anvaya oṃ bhūḥ bhuvaḥ svaḥ savituḥ devasya tat vareṇyam bhargaḥ dhīmahi yaḥ naḥ dhiyaḥ pracodayāt
chandas Gāyatrī, 3 pādas of 8 syllables
savituḥ of Savitā, the sun — Savitā is the sun taken as the one who sets everything moving. What the verse asks for is that light at work in the mind.
bhargaḥ the light — Bhargas is the sun's burning brightness. Commentators read it as the light that burns away what is unclean in the one who meditates.
dhīmahi we take in, we meditate on — A Vedic form. It carries both taking something in and holding it in thought.
bhūḥ bhuvaḥ svaḥ earth, mid-air, heaven — The three vyāhṛtis. They are placed before the verse for recitation and are not part of the Rig Vedic verse itself.
note Rig Veda 3.62.10, seen by Viśvāmitra. oṃ and the three vyāhṛtis are added in front when it is recited. vareṇyaṃ is sung as va-re-ṇi-yaṃ so that the pāda comes to eight syllables.
