ગોદાવરિ સ્તુતિ - સર્વમઙ્ગલમાઙ્ગાલ્યે બ્રાહ્મિ માહેશ્વરિ શુભે
(Godavari Stuti in Gujarati)
Also known as sarvamangalamangalye brahmi mahesvari subhe vaisnavi tryambake
Two verses to the Godavari, and between them they say everything the river is held to be. The first gives her the great goddesses' titles outright — auspicious among all auspicious things, Brahmi, Maheshvari, Vaishnavi, Tryambaka's own — and ends on the salutation the second repeats. The second is the one that carries the story. It calls her born from the matted hair of the three-eyed god, which is the claim the Ganga usually holds; the destroyer of Gautama's sin, which is the Godavari's own legend, the sage having brought her down to wash away the killing of a cow; and the one who goes to the sea in seven streams, which is the delta. So in a single verse she is given Shiva's hair for a source, a sage for a cause, and seven mouths for an end.
