Lord Hanuman

śrīhanumatsūktam

(Hanumat Suktam in English (IAST))

Traditional

Also known as hanuman suktam · hanumat sukta · hanuman sukta

A sukta rather than a stotra, and written in prose — one unbroken chain of compound epithets with no metre holding it, which is what marks the form off from everything else in this cluster. Much of what it says is uncommon. He is mounted on a camel; he has five faces and fifteen eyes and carries every divine weapon; he is the husband of Suvarchala; he is called the son of Parvati and the child of Ishvara. He wanders where he pleases along the shore of the Pampa and over Gandhamadana, and lives inside a golden rampart in a grove of golden plantains. He is silver-coloured and like clear crystal, wearing a girdle set with many jewels, a golden sacred thread and silk. Its closing line asks for little: whoever reads this even once is freed from all sins.
