A hundred and eight names for the nine planets taken together — samuccaya means the aggregate — and the grammar is the whole point. Every name in the list stands in the plural, addressed to all nine at once rather than to any one of them, which is unusual enough in this form to be the first thing to notice about it. So they are lords of the planets, witnesses of the world, of measureless nature, images of compassion, bearers of the harsh rod, sky-goers standing in the twelve signs, crowned with the nine gems. Some names could only be plural: lords of the lunar mansions, lords of the signs beginning with Aries, and the last of them, which simply salutes the nine planet-deities beginning with the Sun. Its opening meditation names all nine in order and asks that they be well disposed.
