The Saints of Maharashtra (Namdev, Tukaram, Eknath)

সংতজনাংচী আরতী (আরতী সংতমংডল়ী)

(Santajananchi Aarti in Bengali)

Also known as hatim gheunim puspamjali omvalina pamcapranem

A Marathi arati not to a god but to the whole company of saints, and its body is a roll of names — some fifty of them, said straight through. It begins with the Nath line, Machhindra and Gorakh and Gahini and Nivrittinath, and goes on to Jnanadev and Namdev, Visoba Khechar, Sopan and Changadev, Gora and Kabir and Chokha; then Bhanudas and Krishnadas, Mukundaraj and Keshavswami and Surdas, Ranganath and Vamanswami; then Eknath and Ramdas, and Mirabai and Muktabai and Bahinabai, Narahari the goldsmith and Savata the gardener, Rohidas and Janabai and Kanhopatra's companions. Shekh Mahammad is in the list too. What the arati is for is stated in its first line: to wave five vital breaths as the lamp before their feet, and it makes no distinction of caste or of creed while doing it.
