A hundred and eight names of Kumari in the form used for offering, prefaced by a viniyoga that names Ishvara as seer and, in one compound, gives the deity as Kumari Durga — so the girl worshipped in the Navaratri rite is identified with the great goddess before a single name is said. Its meditation is short and entirely about capability rather than appearance: the daughter of the mountain king, Bhavani, singularly skilled in the protection of those who have come for refuge, with the gestures of boon and fearlessness and the discus and conch in her hands. The mantra is given in one line before the list begins. The archana is performed on a living girl during the kumari puja, which is why the record carries a mantra and a meditation that a household can use without a priest.
