Lord Surya

śrī ravi stotram (sāmbapurāṇe)

(Sri Ravi Stotram (Samba Purana) in English (IAST))

Also known as sri ravi stotram · ravi stotram samba purana · surya stotra samba purana chapter 43

Ten verses from the forty-third chapter of the Sāmba Purāṇa. It opens by naming both of the Sun's wives in a single line — Chāyā and Saṃjñā — beside prakṛti and puruṣa, and calls him unsupported and without refuge in the same breath as it calls him the refuge of all beings. From there the verses work through his offices in pairs that will not resolve: he dries and he drenches, he is the frost and he is the fire that consumes, he is creation and maintenance and dissolution at once. One verse makes him the law rather than merely lawful — the rule, the just one, the one who judges, the increaser of justice — and another has him protect both those who have reached him and those still held up in high places. It ends on the plainest epithet in it, and the one the whole hymn has been moving toward: kinsman of those who have no kin.
