विश्वम्भरी स्तुति

O Viśvambharī — sustainer of the entire universe, creator of all beings, bearer of wisdom — O creator seated as knowledge on the face of Brahmā — drive away foolish understanding and grant good understanding. O mother, protect [us].

O Bhavānī — I have fallen into the whirlpool of worldly existence and am wandering lost. I can see no direction at this age. The frightening veil of māyā covers the mind's fire. O Jananī (mother), seeing my pain, take me across.

There is no one to uplift this destitute one — O Jananī, I have taken birth from you; I am your child. Will you not hear, O Bhagavatī, the weeping of your child? O mother, you who are the giver of milk, do not let go of my hand.

I think about what my karma and birth should say — in this creation, without you there is no one who is mine. To whom shall I tell the story of my yoga's path? O mother, only you know my inner secrets.

I became intoxicated by kāma, krodha (anger), mad (pride), and moha (delusion) — was extremely intoxicated with the noise of empty display. Faults having made me impure — do not cause [me to] be forgiven without purifying [me]. O mother, I am your servant.

I have not drunk the milk of hearing the scriptures. I have done nothing — no mantra, no prayer, no story. I have not kept faith and have not surrendered. O mother, accept the one who has come with only devotion.

O Bhavānī — many, many are my mistakes. This life has become greatly burdensome to me. Having burned all faults — O great lamp of your [light] — see: in this whirlpool I am drowning.

There is no place empty of your presence — in every atom (aṇu) of the cosmos your dwelling (vāsa) is. To measure the extent of [your] power is beyond counting, O mother — in the sky, in the water, in the earth, you dwell.

I am ready in all ways to commit more sins — O Bhagavatī, wrong or right, I am yours. Remove the darkness of ignorance, grant good wisdom, and look — I am here, your servant, at your feet.

Rasika Canda — listening and learning with one mind — from that [practice], various types of afflictions (tāpa) are extinguished in the heart. Mother Ambā's name grows and spreads — through that, liberation is attained, O mind, recite!

Remaining in the shelter of the true Guru, I worship — day and night, O Bhagavatī, I worship you. The sorrows of the true devotee-servant are extinguished — O mother, having come to your feet, my mind has found rest.

In the heart, the inner longing grows, O Bhavānī — through the force of praising [you], I bow and sing, O Mṛgāṇī (the doe-eyed goddess). May all the ailments of worldly existence be completely uprooted — may the mother's name resound in every heart.
