Gurudeva

bhavasāgara tāraṇa kāraṇa he

(Bhava Sagara Tarana in English (IAST))

Also known as bhavasagara tarana karana he

The guru-vandana sung at the opening of worship in a great many maths and ashrams, eight verses each ending on the same plea: Gurudeva, have mercy on this poor man. It is not in classical Sanskrit but in the Bengali devotional idiom, and says tumi for you. What it asks the teacher to be is stated in a run of compounds: the cause of the crossing of the sea of becoming, the breaker of the bonds that the Sun's son lays; the sun in the cave of the heart that scatters its darkness; the goad that governs the elephant of the mind; the breaker of the sleep of the coiled power, and the splitter of the knot in the heart. One verse admits what is wrong with the petitioner rather than with the world — my mind is unsteady, night and day — and another that his devotion is cheated and his thought full of doubt.
