Lord Brihaspati

bṛhaspati stotra

(Brihaspati Stotram (Skanda Purana) in English (IAST))

Also known as brihaspati stotra (skanda purana) · gururbrhaspatirjiva suracaryo vidam varah

A Skanda Purana hymn to Jupiter with Gritsamada for its seer, and its whole body is a single string of names, twenty-odd of them, laid down without a verb. Guru, Brihaspati, Jiva, teacher of the gods, best of the learned; lord of speech, the intelligent one, the tall one, the long-bearded, dressed in yellow, and young — that last is worth noticing beside the beard. Then the planet rather than the person: his glance is nectar, he is the ruler of the planets and the one who takes away the affliction they cause, merciful, gentle of form, with the sheen of a flower-bud. Its closing verses turn practical and prescribe the observance exactly — worship on Thursday with yellow scent and unbroken rice and yellow cloth, then flowers and lamps, then feeding brahmins.
