Shri Maha Saraswati Sahasranama Stotram

Dhyanam May the Goddess of Speech (Vagdevi), whose radiant body is smeared with auspicious sandalwood paste, who is dressed in white garments, whose hair is adorned with jasmine garlands, who shines with a brilliant pearl necklace, who holds a book containing all knowledge, who is adorned with a rudraksha mala, the auspicious mother of the three worlds, reside in the lotus of my mouth.

Shri Narada said: O Lord, the Supreme Lord, the sole master of all worlds! How did Saraswati personally become pleased with Brahma (Parameshti)? (2)

How did he attain the most difficult-to-attain continuous presence of the great Goddess of Speech? Tell me this in truth, O great lord of Yogis. (3)

Shri Sanatkumara said: O Brahman, you have asked well about the most excellent secret of secrets. What was carefully kept hidden due to fear, is now being revealed to the good. (4)

In ancient times, seeing the grandfather (Brahma) along with the moving and unmoving universe, motionless, devoid of light, standing still like a pillar, and devoid of consciousness... (5)

...having created the entire three worlds in that state due to the absence of Speech (Vak), the preceptor of the world, Brahma, feeling the lack of supremacy... (6)

...performed most difficult and excellent penance for ten thousand divine years. Then, at some point, Vani (Speech), adorned with all meanings, manifested. (7)

[She said:] I am the great knowledge (Mahavidya), the supreme sovereign of all speech. I shall instruct you on the most excellent thousand names of mine. (8)

Being constantly praised by you with this, I shall become your wife. The entire universe created by you shall become endowed with speech. (9)

This is the supreme secret, my thousand names. It pacifies the flood of all sins and bestows the great grace of Saraswati. (10)

It grants great poetic skill in the world and bestows the mastery of speech. Whether you or any other supreme person pleases me with this hymn... (11)

...I shall personally become their servant, there is no doubt. Saying this, Vani disappeared. From then on, the Grandfather (Brahma)... (12)

...having praised her with this divine hymn, attained her as his wife. And from then on, O sage, the entire universe became endowed with speech. (13)

Therefore, I shall tell that to you; listen with effort, O Narada. Being attentive in mind and purified for a moment, O lord of sages. (14)

The Granter of the knowledge of Yogis, Yakshi, the Destroyer of the afflictions of Yama, the Granter of the desires of Yogis, the Granter of liberation to Yogis. (144)

Thus the thousand names of Saraswati have been spoken. It is of the nature of mantras, highly secret, and the granter of great eloquence. (1)

A practitioner who reads or listens to this with devotion three times a day, certainly becomes a manifest treasure-house of all knowledge. (2)

He attains all wealth, endowed with sons, grandsons, etc. Even a mute person becomes like another four-faced Brahma in all sciences. (3)

Having become so, O lord of sages, he attains proximity to the Creator in the end. It is the embodiment of all mantras and the granter of the respected fruits of all knowledge. (4)

It grants great poetic skill to men and bestows great accomplishments. It should not be given to just anyone, even if one's life is in the throat (about to die). (5)

The thousand names of Vani are always a great secret. This hymn, well-established among us, has been spoken to you. (6)

Thus ends the Saraswati Sahasranama Stotram in the dialogue between Narada and Sanatkumara in the Sanatkumara Samhita within the Shri Skanda Purana.
