മന്യു സൂക്തമ്

Ṛgveda Saṃhitā, Maṇḍala 10, Sūktas 83–84. Whoever has worshipped you, O Manyu — O thunderbolt, O arrow — increases might and vigour unceasingly. With you as our ally, with strength born of strength, with the overpowering, may we overcome both the Dāsa and the Ārya.

Manyu is Indra; Manyu indeed is the god; Manyu is the invoker, and Varuṇa, and Jātavedas. The human clans worship Manyu. Protect us, O Manyu, you who are of one accord with ardour.

Come near, O Manyu, mightier than the mighty; joined with ardour, strike our foes apart. Slayer of enemies, slayer of Vṛtra, slayer of the Dasyus — bring to us all good things.

For you, O Manyu, are of overwhelming vigour, self-existent, the blaze that subdues those who assail. Belonging to all peoples, overpowering, victorious — place vigour in us in the battles.

Being without a share I have gone away, O far-seeing one, by the will of you the mighty. I, wanting in resolve, have offended you, O Manyu. Come to me in your own person, to give me strength.

Here I am, yours; come toward me, turning hither, O overpowering, all-sustaining one. O Manyu, wielder of the thunderbolt, turn toward me; let us two slay the Dasyus, and think then upon your friend.

Come forward, be upon my right; then let us two strike down many foes. I offer you the sustaining foremost of the honey; let us two drink first, in silence.

With you, O Manyu, upon one chariot, breaking through, exulting, emboldened, O lord of the Maruts — with sharp arrows, whetting their weapons, let the men of fiery form advance.

Like fire, O Manyu, blazing, prevail; being invoked, be the leader of our army, O overpowering one. Having slain the foes, apportion their wealth; measuring out your vigour, drive off the scorners.

Overpower, O Manyu, the assailant against us; breaking, crushing, grinding down, advance upon the foes. They have not withstood your fierce strength; you the master lead the subdued, O you who are born alone.

You alone are praised among many, O Manyu; whet clan after clan for the fight. With you as ally, O you of unblunted brilliance, we raise a resounding shout for victory.

Maker of victories like Indra, unassailable — be here our overlord, O Manyu. We sing your dear name, O overpowering one; we know the spring from which you have arisen.

Born together with power, O thunderbolt, O arrow — you bear a might higher still, O overcomer. By your resolve, O Manyu, be our ally, O much-invoked, in the winning of great wealth.

May Varuṇa and Manyu give us the gathered wealth of both kinds, brought together. Bearing fear in their hearts, may our enemies, defeated, slink away. With the bow may we win cattle, with the bow the contest; with the bow may we win the fierce encounters. The bow undoes the enemy’s desire; with the bow may we win all the quarters. Om. Peaceful be the earth, auspicious the mid-air; may the divine sky be free of fear for us. Auspicious be the quarters, the intermediate and the upward; may the waters guard us wholly on every side. Peace, peace, peace.
