Goddess Narmada

ರೇವಾಮಾಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯವರ್ಣನಮ್

(Reva Mahatmya Varnanam in Kannada)

Also known as reva mahatmya · narmada mahatmya · reva khanda

Markandeya's account of why the Narmada is held above the other rivers, and it makes its case by outlasting them rather than by out-praising them. He begins generously, granting that the Ganga is the best of rivers, and naming Sarasvati and Kaveri and Devika and Sindhu, Sarayu and Shatarudra and Mahi, Godavari and Yamuna and Payoshni and Shatadru, and saying that all of them and others besides are held to take away every sin. Then he gives the reason he was asked for. At the end of every world-age all the seas and all the rivers go to destruction; but through the wearing away of seven such ages the Narmada did not die, and she alone stands, full of water and praised by the companies of sages, when the Ganga and the rest have gone.
