Adi Shankaracharya

श्री शङ्कराचार्य आरात्रिका (जय देव जय देव)

(Shankaracharya Aarti)

A Sanskrit arati to Adi Shankara, addressed to him throughout as sadguru rather than as a philosopher, and its images are all of crossing or of light. He is the boat on the sea of becoming; the sun of the bliss of consciousness that dispels the darkness of delusion; a spotless quiet moon and a wish-granting jewel; the nectar that cures the disease of birth. One epithet is sharper than the rest and gives away what the hymn thinks he did — a forest fire in the wood of wrong doctrine — set immediately beside a gentler one, a pleasure-garden for the mind's good. The last verse ends not with a request but with a statement, that having praised the teacher Shankara one is brahman itself, dense with unbroken bliss, which is the doctrine the arati is quietly performing rather than describing.
