Lord Dattatreya

श्रीदत्तात्रेयारात्रिका

(Shri Dattatreya Aratrika (Sanskrit Aarti))

Also known as sri dattatreya aratrika (sanskrit aarti) · shree dattatreya aratrika (sanskrit aarti) · dattatreya aratrika (sanskrit aarti)

An āratī in Sanskrit beginning 'Jaya deva jaya deva jaya Dattātreya', addressed to the swan on the lake of the sages' minds. What makes it unusual among āratīs is that it is almost entirely Advaita and says so in plain terms: the refrain is tat tvam asi, the son of Atri and Anasūyā exists in order that you may know your own nature, and each of the three lotus faces teaches the same thing — I am brahman alone, and so are you. The third stanza gives the three means as knowledge, dispassion and quiet. The fourth reads the iconography as doctrine, the white cow being his own power as vidyā and the dogs the Vedas he keeps. The last denies the whole apparatus outright — no māyā, no ignorance, no duality, no individual soul set against a lord, no body set against a cosmos — and calls the five-fold āratī itself natural and without qualities.
