Lord Chandra

candrāṣṭāviṃśatināmastotram

(Candrastavimsatinamastotram in English (IAST))

Also known as sri chandra ashtavimsati nama stotram · candrastavimsatinamastotra · candrasya srnu namani subhadani mahipate

Twenty-eight names of the moon in verse, one for each of the twenty-eight lunar mansions the older reckoning counts, with Gautama named as the seer and Soma as the deity. It is addressed to a king — hear the names of Candra, lord of the earth, which are givers of good, hearing which a man is freed from sorrow, and there is no doubt in this. The names run Sudhākara, Soma, Glau, Abja, lover of the night-lotus, beloved of the world, of bright rays, Candramas, husband of Rohiṇī; then Śaśin, the frost-maker, the king, king of the twice-born, maker of night, the son of Atri, Indu, the cool-rayed, lord of herbs, treasury of the digits. Its closing verse ties the recitation to the calendar rather than to a general merit: read on the appropriate day, it is said to give the strength of the moon among all the planets.
