A hundred and eight names of the serpent deities taken together, and the list is ordered by the alphabet, so it opens with a long run of names beginning with a — Ananta and Adishesha, the one without disease, the one who ranges over the whole earth, of measureless valour, worshipped by the unblinking gods. One name in that first group is worth stopping at, because it comes from an image rather than a doctrine: the one bound around Vinayaka's belly, which is the snake Ganesha wears as a belt. The record is used as an archana on Naga Panchami and at the shrines where stone serpent-slabs are set under a tree, and it addresses the whole class rather than any single naga, which is why the names shift between the cosmic serpent and the ones a village knows.
