Goddess Shakambhari

श्री शाकम्भरी आरती (जय देवि)

(Shakambhari Aarti (Sanskrit Arati Jai Devi Jagadadhare))

Also known as shakambhari aarti

A Sanskrit arati that exists to explain three names, and takes them one stanza at a time. There was no rain for a hundred years and the world was without food; then, raining from a hundred eyes upon it, she protected it and gave it food in full, and from that she is Shatakshi, the hundred-eyed. She kept the world alive with vegetables grown from her own body, and from that she is Shakambhari, the bearer of herbs. And from the killing of Durgamasura, who had afflicted all three worlds, the name Durga came to her. Only in the last stanza does it stop deriving and start identifying: you alone are Maya and Prakriti and mother; you are Bala and Bagala and Durga and Lalita; you are Bhima, and the Himalaya's daughter, and Vani and Lakshmi, and the mother of Raghu's son.
