ଶ୍ରୀମାର୍ତଣ୍ଡଭୈରଵସ୍ତୋତ୍ରମ୍ (ସୂର୍ଯ ଭୈରଵ ସ୍ତୋତ୍ର)

A hymn to Mārtaṇḍa Bhairava, the form in which the Sun and Bhairava are one god — the deity worshipped at Jejuri as Khaṇḍobā — and it is spoken by the Bhairavas themselves rather than by a sage or by Śiva. The joining is made in the epithets rather than argued: he is saluted as Sthāṇu and as the supreme self in one line and as Bhairava, terrible, in the next; then as skilled in raising the dead and as the cause of deliverance from the womb; then as Hiraṇyagarbha and as the impeller of thought, which quotes the Gāyatrī at the god it belongs to. Later verses put the two names side by side without seam — to Viśvāmitra, to Sūrya, to the seer, to the supreme self, to the one whose form is the great Bhairava — and the closing verses pile intensifiers, hero beyond heroes, terrible beyond the terrible, whose light is beyond the sun and the moon and the fire.
