ଶ୍ରୀ ସୂର୍ଯଚନ୍ଦ୍ରକଲା ସ୍ତୋତ୍ରମ୍

A hymn addressed to the Sun and the Moon together, which is rare — they are almost always praised apart — and every verse ends on the same half-line, the Sun and the Moon are my refuge. The method is to name them as a pair in each verse and let the contrast do the work: lord of day and lord of night, beloved of Chāyā and of Rohiṇī, sprung from Kaśyapa and from Atri; the two chief planets, the flowering pair, lords of Leo and of Cancer, of rays too hot and rays not hot at all; one chariot with a single wheel and one with three, the two sole witnesses of the world. A later verse names their mothers side by side, the goddess called Aditi and the goddess called Anasūyā, and calls the two of them the makers of health and of gladness — the one thing they are asked for jointly rather than in contrast.
