Savitri and Satyavan

ವಟಸಾವಿತ್ರೀಚೀ ಆರತೀ (ಅಶ್ವಪತೀ ಪುಸತಾ ಝಾಲಾ)

(Vat Savitri Aarti in Kannada)

Also known as asvapati pusata jhala narada samgatati tayala

The Marathi arati of the Vata Savitri vow, and it tells the whole story in the space of three verses. Ashvapati asks and Narada tells him: Satyavan is short-lived. Savitri has chosen him even so, and though she is offered another husband her mind is made up. Then the vow itself is dated and described — the thirteenth of the month of Jyeshtha, the worship performed at the banyan, the three-night observance kept — and it says plainly that by it she defeated Yama for Satyavan. Its last verse is the strangest and the best: gone up to the world of the gods she shook the pillar of fire, and the king of dharma started up, saying she would bring the guilt of a killing on a life — come, faithful wife, take your husband away. The refrain turns the lamps not before a god but before the banyan.
