Goddess Annapurna

annapūrṇe sadāpūrṇe

(Annapurne Sadhapurne in English (IAST))

Also known as annapurne sadapurne

This verse invokes Goddess Annapūrṇa, the divine provider of nourishment, whose name itself reveals her nature – ‘Anna’ meaning food and ‘Pūrṇa’ meaning 'filled with' or complete. As the beloved of Shankara (Shiva), she is eternally complete in her ability to nourish the world. The devotee's prayer for alms transcends physical sustenance (food), seeking spiritual nourishment through "jñāna vairāgya sidhyartham." Through this prayer, one aspires to attain knowledge (jñāna) and detachment (vairāgya). These two aspects work together - knowledge leads to understanding, while vairāgya (detachment from worldly attachments) creates the mental space necessary for spiritual progress.
