Goddess Matangi

நவரத்நமாலா (ஶ்யாமலாநவரத்நமாலிகா)

(Navaratnamala Syamalanavaratnamalika in Tamil)

Kalidasa

Also known as navaratnamala shyamala stotram · matangistotram ca

Nine verses given in the colophon to the poet Kalidasa, known as the Navaratnamala or the Shyamala Navaratnamalika, and the record's own heading treats Shyamala and Matangi as one name for one goddess. The opening verse is the reason the poem is remembered: the parrot in the cage of Om, the sweet-throated bird in the pleasure-garden of the Upanishads, the peahen in the forest of the Agamas — her, the noble one, the fair one, I contemplate within. Later verses come down to the particular: the ear-ornament of tali leaf struck against the coil of hair at the nape, and the head that keeps time of itself while the vina is being played.
