ପଵମାନ ସୂକ୍ତମ୍

Om. Golden-hued, pure and purifying, in whom Kaśyapa was born and in whom Indra; who, of many forms, bore Agni as their germ — may those waters be gracious and kindly to us.

In whose midst King Varuṇa moves, looking down upon the truth and the falsehood of men; distilling honey, bright and purifying — may those waters be gracious and kindly to us.

Of whom the gods in heaven make their food; which become manifold in the mid-air; which drench the earth with milk, the bright ones — may those waters be gracious and kindly to us.

Look upon me with an auspicious eye, O waters; touch my skin with an auspicious body. I call upon you all, the fires that dwell within the waters: place in me lustre, strength and vigour.

The purifying one, begetter of the heavenly light, all-discerning through the filter — may he who purifies purify me. May the hosts of the gods purify me; may the thoughtful purify me by their understanding; may all the peoples purify me. O Jātavedas, possessed of the filter, purify me with your filter. With the bright, god-shining flame, O Agni, by your will and following upon the wills. That filter of yours which is stretched within your flame, O Agni — with that we purify the sacred word. With both, O divine Savitṛ — with the filter and with the impelling — we purify this sacred word. The Vaiśvadevī, the purifying goddess, has come, she whose bodies are many and broad-backed; rejoicing with her at the common feasts, may we be lords of riches. May Vaiśvānara purify me with his rays; may the wind, quickening with breath, be a delight; may heaven and earth, rich in order and worthy of sacrifice, purify me with their milk and their streams.

With your great and lofty rays, O Savitṛ, with your god-thoughts; purify me, O Agni, with your powers. By that divine sacred word with which the gods purified themselves, and with which the waters purified the heavenly — with that we purify this word. Whoever studies the Pāvamānī verses, the essence gathered by the seers, eats all things purified, made sweet by Mātariśvan. To whoever studies the Pāvamānī verses, the essence gathered by the seers, Sarasvatī yields milk, ghee, honey and water.

The Pāvamānī verses lead to well-being, richly yielding and full of milk; the essence the seers gathered is set among the brāhmaṇas as the immortal. May the Pāvamānī verses grant us this world and that; may they fulfil our desires — the goddesses brought together with the gods. The Pāvamānī verses lead to well-being, richly yielding and dripping with ghee; the essence the seers gathered is set among the brāhmaṇas as the immortal. By that purifier with which the gods ever purify themselves, with that thousand-streamed purifier may the Pāvamānī verses purify me. The purifier of Prajāpati, hundred-streamed and golden — with that we, knowers of the sacred word, purify the purified word. May Indra purify me with good guidance, Soma with well-being, Varuṇa with harmony; may King Yama purify me with his crushing powers, and Jātavedas with what makes strength. Bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ, suvaḥ.

Om. We choose that peace and health: a straight path for the sacrifice, a straight path for the lord of the sacrifice. May there be divine well-being for us, and well-being for men. Let healing rise upward. May there be peace for our two-footed, and peace for our four-footed.
