Lord Krishna (Govardhan)

śrī govardhana mahārāja kī āratī

(Shri Govardhan Maharaj Ki Aarti (Hindi Aarti) in English (IAST))

Also known as sri govardhan maharaj ki aarti (hindi aarti) · shree govardhan maharaj ki aarti (hindi aarti) · govardhan maharaj ki aarti (hindi aarti)

An aarti sung to a hill. Govardhan is addressed here as Maharaj in his own right, and the refrain returns each time to the same image — the crown resting upon your brow. What is offered is what is actually carried up the hill: betel leaf, flowers, and a poured stream of milk. The middle of the song is pilgrimage geography rather than praise, and would be recognised by anyone who has walked it — your circuit is seven kos, and Chakleshwar is where the rest is taken. Then the necklace at the throat and the great spread of the tableau. It closes with the plainest promise an aarti makes: whoever comes for the sight of this is greatly fortunate, and sin and affliction alike are wiped away.

śrī govardhana mahārāja, tere māthe mukuṭa birāja raheyo |
tope pāna caṛhe, tope phūla caṛhe, tope caṛhe dūdha kī dhāra|

tere māthe mukuṭa birāja raheyo||
terī jhāṃkī banī viśāla, jo nara darśana karane āve|
so nara baṛe bhāgaśālī, pāpa-tāpa saba miṭa jāve||
