Lord Chandra

candra cālīsā

(Chandra Chalisa in English (IAST))

Also known as jayajaya camda sri candrama jayajaya amrtaamsuujagara

The Chālīsā of Candra in Hindi, opening with a dohā that hails him as the ever-flowing ocean of nectar and the treasury of the digits. It is the most informative of the Chandra texts here because it explains rather than salutes: you were produced from the ocean of milk, and so are called its son; your chariot is white and drawn by ten horses, and you move through the sky as the path of all; you are lord of the twenty-seven lunar mansions; you hold the sixteen digits, and waning and waxing you are the inner ruler; when you become full, festivals of every kind are held. The closing dohā names the two relations by which he is placed in the tradition and asks for shelter — you are the father of Budha and the son of the moon-line; protect me, mine of nectar, and guard one who has come for refuge.
