Goddess Durga

श्रीदुर्गाजी की आरती (जगजननी जय! जय! मा!)

(Jagjanani Jai Jai Maa Aarti)

Also known as bhayaharini bhavatarini

A Hindi arati sung to the Goddess as Brahman rather than as a figure, and its adjectives are nearly all negative ones: beginningless and without beginning, free of disease, unmoving, imperishable, spotless, endless, imperceptible, unborn, a heap of bliss with no part in change. The creator Vidhi, the sustainer Hari and the destroyer Hara are all named as her doing. Then the identifications widen — she is Brahma's bride and Rama and Uma, the root Prakriti, and Rama and Krishna and Sita and the queen of Vraja besides; the ten Vidyas, the nine Durgas, the eight Matrikas and the Yoginis. The last two verses drop the register altogether: we are wretched, they say, and deceitful and worthless sons, and still your children.
