Lord Narasimha

ശ്രീനൃസിംഹാര്തിഃ (കാശീനാഥോപാധ്യായകൃതാ)

(Shri Nrisimha Arti (Kashinatha Upadhyaya) in Malayalam)

Kashinatha Upadhyaya

Also known as sri nrisimhartih · shree nrisimhartih · nrisimhartih

The third of the Sanskrit Nṛsiṃha āratīs kept here, signed in its colophon by Kāśīnātha Upādhyāya, whose name is also worked into the last line as one whose feet grant refuge to the bowed. Unlike the other two it does not describe the appearance at all: the god it sings is already seated and at rest, in firm yogic posture in the middle of the ocean of milk, his lotus feet coloured by the gems in the crowns of the gods bending over them, Lakṣmī on his left with her eyes half closed, his bright face set off by earrings like lightning. The second stanza turns from the figure to the condition of the singer, describing a self that has forgotten its own nature under the wrapping of māyā's qualities — which is what the calm image is offered against.
