Lord Surya

दिनकरार्तिक्यम्

(Dinakara Artikyam (Sanskrit Aarti))

Mayureshwara

Also known as dinakara artikyam · jai dinkar jai bhaskar · surya aarti in sanskrit

An āratī to the Sun composed in Sanskrit, which is unusual in itself — the form is almost always sung in the regional languages — by Mayūreśvara, son of Rāmanandana. Its refrain hails him as Dinakara, Bhāskara, Bhaga and Taraṇa, the ferry across the fear of birth and death. The three stanzas keep to what he does rather than to how he looks: he sets good men to their work and sends down the rain, he gives sight to a world that would otherwise be blind, he is the lamp in the house of the world and the eye of every creature, the grief of the Mandeha demons driven off at the dawn offering, and the warmth that opens the lotus. The closing stanza signs itself with a pun — as the raincloud gladdens the flock of peacocks, so you gladden us — mayūra being the poet's own name.
