Lord Vitthal

śrīviṭhṭhalārtikyam

(Shree Vitthala Artikyam in English (IAST))

Also known as vitthala artikyam · jaya jaya viththala bhagavan karunamayamurte

A Sanskrit arati to Vitthal, written to the metre and the manner of the Marathi ones sung beside it, three verses under the refrain jaya jaya vitthala bhagavan, form made of compassion. Its argument concerns who has a claim on him. Souls too soiled to qualify for Veda, shastra or observance are made clean simply by having seen his lotus feet, or remembered them, or bowed to them; and then Kali, who has swallowed the whole world and is strong, salutes those same souls from a distance with his hands joined. The second verse says the Bhimarathi bank has been made Vaikuntha by his standing on it, that he makes a dullard fluent as a parrot, and that Shiva carries the water of his feet on his head. The third is an image of his servants seeing him as peacocks see a cloud, eyes drowned, their errands entirely forgotten.
