ருத்ராஷ்டாத்யாயீ (ஶுக்ல யஜுர்வேத)

Invocation and meditation: I bow to Gaṇeśa, the god who grants attainment, the loving protector; the womb of the universe, lord of obstacles, without beginning, auspicious, all-pervading.

Meditation: Let one meditate always upon Maheśa, like a mountain of silver, beautiful, crowned with the crescent moon; his limbs blazing with jewelled ornaments, bearing the axe and the deer and the gestures of boon-giving and fearlessness, serene.

Seated upon the lotus, praised on every side by the hosts of the immortals, clad in a tiger’s skin; first of the universe, adored by the universe, remover of every fear, five-faced and three-eyed.

Chapter One — the Gaṇapati mantras and the Śiva Saṅkalpa Sūkta.

Hariḥ Om. We invoke you, the lord of hosts among the hosts; we invoke you, the beloved lord among the beloved; we invoke you, the lord of treasures among the treasures. O giver of dwelling, be mine. I am born as bearer of the germ; you too are born bearer of the germ.

Gāyatrī, triṣṭubh, jagatī and anuṣṭubh together with paṅkti; bṛhatī, uṣṇih and kakubh — may these with their needles make you whole.

The four-footed metres for the two-footed, the six-footed for the three-footed; those of irregular measure and those of regular — may these with their needles make you whole.

Together with their stomas, together with their metres and their turnings, together with their measures — the seven divine seers; beholding the path of those who went before, the steadfast took it up, as charioteers take up the reins.

That divine power which travels far from the waking, and which comes likewise to the one asleep; the far-ranging single light of lights — may that mind of mine be of auspicious resolve.

By which the skilled and thoughtful, the steadfast, perform their works in the sacrifice and in the assemblies; that which is without precedent, the wonder within all creatures — may that mind of mine be of auspicious resolve.

That which is understanding and awareness and steadfastness, the immortal light within all creatures, without which no act whatever is done — may that mind of mine be of auspicious resolve.

By which all this — what has been, what is, what shall be — is encompassed with the immortal; by which the sacrifice of the seven priests is extended — may that mind of mine be of auspicious resolve.

In which the ṛcs, the sāmans and the yajuses are set fast, as the spokes are set in the nave of a wheel; in which all the thought of creatures is woven — may that mind of mine be of auspicious resolve.

Which leads men as a skilled charioteer leads swift horses by the reins; which is seated in the heart, unaging and swiftest of all — may that mind of mine be of auspicious resolve.

Thus the first chapter in the Rudra.

Chapter Two — the Puruṣa Sūkta.

Hariḥ Om. The Puruṣa has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. Covering the earth on every side, he stood beyond it by ten fingers’ breadth.

The Puruṣa alone is all this — what has been and what is yet to be. He is the lord of immortality, and of that which grows by food.

Such is his greatness, and the Puruṣa is greater still. All beings are one quarter of him; three quarters of him are the immortal in heaven.

With three quarters the Puruṣa rose upward; one quarter of him came to be here again. Thence he spread abroad on every side, over what eats and what does not eat.

From him Virāj was born, and from Virāj the Puruṣa. Once born, he reached beyond the earth, behind and before.

From that sacrifice, wholly offered, the clotted butter was gathered. He made of it the beasts of the air, and those of the forest and of the village.

From that sacrifice, wholly offered, the ṛcs and the sāmans were born; from it the metres were born, and from it the yajus was born.

From it were born horses, and all creatures having two rows of teeth; from it cattle were born, and from it were born goats and sheep.

When they consecrated upon the sacred grass that sacrifice, the Puruṣa born at the beginning — with him the gods performed the sacrifice, and the Sādhyas and the seers.

When they divided the Puruṣa, into how many parts did they arrange him? What was his mouth, what his arms, what are called his thighs and his feet?

The brāhmaṇa was his mouth; the kṣatriya was made his arms; the vaiśya was his thighs; from his feet the śūdra was born.

The moon was born of his mind; from his eye the sun was born; from his ear the wind and the breath; from his mouth fire was born.

From his navel came the mid-air; from his head the sky unfolded; from his feet the earth, from his ear the quarters — thus they fashioned the worlds.

When the gods spread the sacrifice with the Puruṣa as their oblation, spring was its clarified butter, summer its kindling, autumn its offering.

Seven were its enclosing sticks; thrice seven the fuel-sticks were made, when the gods, spreading the sacrifice, bound the Puruṣa as the victim.

With the sacrifice the gods sacrificed to the sacrifice; these were the first ordinances. Those powers reached the firmament, where dwell the ancient Sādhyas, the gods.

Gathered from the waters and from the essence of the earth, he came forth in the beginning from Viśvakarman. Tvaṣṭṛ goes on shaping his form. This, at the beginning, was the godhead of the mortal.

I know this great Puruṣa, of the colour of the sun, beyond all darkness. Knowing him alone one passes beyond death; there is no other path for the going.

Prajāpati moves within the womb; himself unborn, he is born in many ways. The steadfast perceive his origin; in him all the worlds have taken their stand.

He who shines upon the gods, who is the chief priest of the gods, who was born before the gods — salutation to that radiance, to the holy power.

Generating the holy radiance, the gods in the beginning said this: whichever brāhmaṇa shall know you thus, the gods shall be in his power.

Śrī and Lakṣmī are your two consorts; day and night your two sides; the constellations your form; the Aśvins your open mouth. Desiring, grant me what I desire; grant me all the world.

Thus the second chapter in the Rudra.

Chapter Three — the Apratiratha Sūkta, the hymn of the warrior none can withstand.

Hariḥ Om. Swift and whetted, terrible as a bull, the smiter, the shaker of peoples; the roarer, the unblinking, the one hero — Indra conquered a hundred armies at a stroke.

With the roaring, the unblinking, the victorious, the maker of battle, the unshakable, the daring — with that Indra conquer, O men, and hold fast in the fight; with the bull who bears arrows in his hand.

He with the arrow-bearers, he with the quiver-bearers, the master; he who marshals the fight, Indra with his host; conqueror of the gathered foe, drinker of soma, mighty of arm, of terrible bow, the archer with shafts laid to the string.

O Bṛhaspati, fly about with your chariot, driving off the demons and the foes; shattering their armies, crushing them, conquering in battle — be the protector of our chariots.

Known by your strength, firm, foremost among heroes, mighty, swift, overpowering, terrible; hero above heroes, warrior above warriors, born of might — mount, O Indra, the victorious chariot, the winner of cattle.

The breaker of strongholds, the winner of cattle, the thunder-armed, conquering the onset and crushing it with his force — him, O kinsmen, follow with valour; hold fast to Indra, O friends.

Plunging with might upon the strongholds, pitiless, the hero, Indra of a hundred angers; unshakable, victor in battle, not to be fought against — may he guard our armies in the fights.

Let Indra be the leader of our hosts, and Bṛhaspati; let the sacrificial gift, the sacrifice and Soma go before us; and let the Maruts go at the head of the armies of the gods, shattering and conquering.

The fierce might of Indra the bull, of King Varuṇa, of the Ādityas and of the Maruts — the shout of the great-minded, world-shaking, conquering gods has risen up.

Rouse up our weapons, O bounteous one; rouse up the spirits of my warriors; rouse up, O slayer of Vṛtra, the strength of the steeds; let the thunder of the conquering chariots go forth.

May Indra be ours where the banners meet; may these arrows of ours prevail. May our heroes come out above them; and you, O gods, protect us when we call.

Bewildering the minds of those yonder, seize their limbs, O Apvā, and go forth. Go against them, burn them with anguish in their hearts; let our enemies be wrapped in blinding darkness.

Fly forth when loosed, O arrow, sharpened by prayer; go to the enemies and enter them; leave not one of them remaining.

Go forward and conquer, O men; may Indra grant you shelter. Let your arms be mighty, that you may be unassailable.

That army of the foe yonder, O Maruts, which comes against us contending in strength — hide it in darkness without end, so that they may not know one another.

Where the arrows fly together like boys with unshorn hair, there may Indra, Bṛhaspati and Aditi grant us shelter; may they grant us shelter all our days.

I cover your vital parts with armour; may King Soma clothe you in the immortal. May Varuṇa make for you room wider than wide; may the gods rejoice as you conquer.

Thus the third chapter in the Rudra.

Chapter Four — the Saura Sūkta and the Maitra Sūkta. Hariḥ Om. May the far-shining and mighty one drink the sweet soma, granting unbroken life to the lord of the sacrifice. Driven by the wind, guarding of his own accord, he has nourished the creatures and shines forth in manifold ways.

The rays bear upward that god Jātavedas, that all the world may behold the sun.

With that light, O purifier, by which you look upon the busy race of men — with that, O Varuṇa, you behold.

O divine adhvaryus, come with your chariot whose covering is the sun; anoint the sacrifice with honey. As of old, this Vena is the wonder of the gods.

Him, as of old and as before, as everywhere and as here — the highest, seated upon the sacred grass, the finder of the light; the strong one turned toward us, to be milked, the roaring, the swift and conquering, in whom you grow.

This Vena urges on those born of the dappled one, whose caul is light, in the measuring out of the mid-air. At the meeting of the waters and the sun, the inspired ones caress him with their thoughts, as one caresses a child.

The wonderful front of the gods has risen — the eye of Mitra, of Varuṇa, of Agni. He has filled heaven and earth and the mid-air: the sun is the self of all that moves and all that stands still.

Let the god Savitṛ, who belongs to all men, come to us in the assembly with refreshment and fair praise; so that you, O youthful ones, may gladden us, and our thought may reach the whole world at the coming of the day.

Upon whatever you have risen today, O slayer of Vṛtra, O Sun — all of it, O Indra, stands in your power.

You are the swift one, seen by all, the maker of light, O Sun; you illumine all the shining realm.

That is the godhead of the Sun, that his greatness: in the midst of his work he gathers up what he had spread abroad. When he has loosed his tawny steeds from their station, then Night draws her garment over all.

That form the Sun assumes in the lap of heaven, for Mitra and Varuṇa to behold. Endless is the one, his bright splendour; the other, the dark, his tawny steeds gather in.

Truly you are great, O Sun; truly, O Āditya, you are great. Great is the greatness of you who are great, and it is praised: truly, O god, you are great.

Truly, O Sun, you are great in renown; wholly, O god, you are great. By your greatness you are the mighty one among the gods, the chief priest, the far-shining and inviolable light.

As men resort to the sun, so partake you all of Indra’s bounty. When he was born we thought upon the treasures, as upon our own portion, in the might of the newborn.

Today, O gods, at the rising of the sun, deliver us from distress and from blame. May Mitra and Varuṇa grant us this, and Aditi, the river, the earth and the sky.

Rolling onward through the dark realm, laying to rest the immortal and the mortal alike, the god Savitṛ comes in his golden chariot, beholding the worlds.

Thus the fourth chapter in the Rudra.

Chapter Five — the Rudra Sūkta, also called the Nīla Sūkta.

Salutations to the wrath of Rudra and to his arrows. Salutations to Rudra's bow and arms.

That auspicious and benevolent form of yours, O Rudra, which destroys sins— with that peaceful form, O Giriśa, make yourself known to us.

That arrow you hold in your hand, O Giriśa, make it peaceful. Do not harm the world or its people.

We invoke you, O Giriśa, with auspicious words so that the whole world may be free from disease and suffering.

The first divine physician, who speaks on our behalf, has spoken for us. Crushing all serpents and driving all sorceresses downward, drive them far away.

The one who is copper-red, reddish-brown, and auburn-hued, very auspicious, and the Rudras that are spread in all directions, may they remove the harm from us.

The blue-throated, red-hued one moves through the world. He is seen by the cowherds and all beings. When seen, he brings protection to us.

Salutations to the blue-throated one, the thousand-eyed one who showers blessings. Salutations to those who follow him.

Release the string of your bow from both ends, O Lord, and may the arrows in your hand be far away from us, O Lord.

Unstrung is the bow of him whose hair is braided; his arrows are without barbs. His shafts have vanished; his quiver is empty.

That weapon in your hand, O most gracious one, that bow—protect us from all directions and make us free from disease.

May the arrows of your bow not harm us from all sides. And may your quiver be placed far away from us.

O thousand-eyed Lord, lower your bow and keep its arrows away from us. Be peaceful and kind to us.

Salutation to your weapon, unstrung yet daring; and salutation to your two arms and to your bow.

Do not harm the elderly, the young, or the infants among us. Do not kill our fathers, mothers, or dear ones. O Rudra, protect us and spare our bodies from harm.

Harm us not in our children or our offspring, nor in our life, nor in our cattle, nor in our horses. Slay not our valiant men in your anger, O Rudra; bearing oblations, we call upon you always.

Salutation to the golden-armed, leader of hosts, lord of the quarters. Salutation to the trees, to the green-haired, lord of beasts. Salutation to the tawny-bright, the shining, lord of paths. Salutation to the green-haired, wearer of the sacred thread, lord of the thriving.

Salutation to the brown one, the piercer, lord of foods. Salutation to the weapon of Bhava, lord of the worlds. Salutation to Rudra of the drawn bow, lord of fields. Salutation to the charioteer who slays not, lord of forests.

Salutation to the red one, the master builder, lord of trees. Salutation to the maker of being, giver of comfort, lord of healing herbs. Salutation to the counsellor, the merchant, lord of thickets. Salutation to him of loud cry, who makes the foe wail, lord of foot-soldiers.

Salutation to him fully girt, who runs, lord of the steadfast. Salutation to the overpowering, the piercer, lord of the piercing hosts. Salutation to the quiver-bearer, the eminent, lord of thieves. Salutation to the prowler, the wanderer, lord of the wilds.

Salutation to the cheat and to the arch-cheat, lord of pilferers. Salutation to the quiver-bearer with his sheath, lord of robbers. Salutation to those bearing spears who seek to slay, lord of plunderers. Salutation to those bearing swords who roam by night, lord of those who cut men down.

Salutation to the turban-wearer, the mountain-ranger, lord of thieving bands. Salutation to you who bear arrows and bows. Salutation to you who draw the bow and lay the arrow to it. Salutation to you who stretch the bow and who let fly.

Salutation to you who discharge and who pierce. Salutation to you who sleep and who wake. Salutation to you who lie down and who sit. Salutation to you who stand and who run.

Salutation to the assemblies and to the lords of assemblies. Salutation to the horses and to the lords of horses. Salutation to the piercing hosts and to those who pierce on every side. Salutation to the strong troops and to those who crush.

Salutation to the hosts and to the lords of hosts. Salutation to the companies and to the lords of companies. Salutation to the clever and to the lords of the clever. Salutation to the misshapen and to those of every shape.

Salutation to the armies and to the leaders of armies. Salutation to the charioteers and to those without chariots. Salutation to the attendants and to the drivers. Salutation to the great and to the small.

Salutation to the carpenters and to the chariot-makers. Salutation to the potters and to the smiths. Salutation to the fowlers and to the fishermen. Salutation to the keepers of dogs and to the hunters.

Salutation to the dogs and to the lords of dogs. Salutation to Bhava and to Rudra. Salutation to Śarva and to Paśupati. Salutation to the blue-necked and to the white-throated.

Salutation to him of braided hair and to him of shaven head. Salutation to the thousand-eyed and to him of a hundred bows. Salutation to the mountain-dweller and to Śipiviṣṭa. Salutation to the most bountiful and to him who bears the arrow.

Salutation to the short and to the dwarf. Salutation to the great and to the greater. Salutation to the aged and to the growing. Salutation to the foremost and to the first.

Salutation to the swift and to the nimble. Salutation to the quick and to the hastening. Salutation to him of the waves and to him of the still waters. Salutation to him of the rivers and to him of the islands.

Salutation to the eldest and to the youngest. Salutation to the firstborn and to the later-born. Salutation to the middlemost and to the undeveloped. Salutation to the hindmost and to him of the depths.

Salutation to him of the assembly-ground and to him who follows after. Salutation to him of the south and to him of safety. Salutation to him worthy of praise and to him of the boundary. Salutation to him of the sown field and to him of the threshing-floor.

Salutation to him of the forest and to him of the thicket. Salutation to sound and to echo. Salutation to him of the swift army and to him of the swift chariot. Salutation to the hero and to the cleaver.

Salutation to him with the helmet and to him with the coat of mail. Salutation to him in armour and to him with the shield. Salutation to the renowned and to him whose army is renowned. Salutation to him of the drum and to him of the drumstick.

Salutation to the daring and to the reckless. Salutation to the quiver-bearer and to him with the sheath. Salutation to him of sharp arrows and to him who bears weapons. Salutation to him of good weapons and to him of the good bow.

Salutation to him of the footpaths and to him of the highroads. Salutation to him of the marsh and to him of the pool. Salutation to him of the canals and to him of the lakes. Salutation to him of the rivers and to him of the tanks.

Salutation to him of the wells and to him of the pits. Salutation to him of the clear sky and to him of the sunshine. Salutation to him of the clouds and to him of the lightning. Salutation to him of the rain and to him of the drought.

Salutation to him of the wind and to him of the storm. Salutation to him of the dwelling and to the guardian of the dwelling. Salutation to Soma and to Rudra. Salutation to the copper-red and to the ruddy.

Salutation to the giver of welfare and to the lord of beasts. Salutation to the terrible and to the fearsome. Salutation to him who slays in front and to him who slays from afar. Salutation to the slayer and to the greatest slayer. Salutation to the trees with their green hair; salutation to the deliverer.

Salutation to the source of happiness and to the source of delight. Salutation to the maker of peace and to the maker of joy. Salutation to the auspicious and to the more auspicious still.

Salutation to him of the farther shore and to him of the nearer. Salutation to him who carries across and to him who brings over. Salutation to him of the fords and to him of the banks. Salutation to him of the young grass and to him of the foam.

Salutation to him of the sands and to him of the flowing stream. Salutation to him of the pebbles and to him of the settled place. Salutation to him of braided hair and to Pulasti. Salutation to him of the barren ground and to him of the highway.

Salutation to him of the cattle-track and to him of the cattle-pen. Salutation to him of the couch and to him of the house. Salutation to him of the heart and to him of the whirlpool. Salutation to him of the marsh and to him who dwells in caverns.

Salutation to him of dry places and to him of green. Salutation to him of the dust and to him of the sand. Salutation to him of the mud and to him of the reeds. Salutation to him of the earth and to him of good soil.

Salutation to him of the leaf and to him of the fallen leaf. Salutation to him who lifts his weapon and to him who strikes. Salutation to him who torments and to him who torments sorely. Salutation to you, makers of arrows and makers of bows. Salutation to you, the scatterers, the hearts of the gods. Salutation to the discerning.

O Drāpi, lord of food, O one clad in poverty, blue and red — do not harm these men, nor these cattle; let none among them suffer or waste away.

We offer our minds and hearts to the mighty Rudra, the one with matted hair, the destroyer of enemies, so that, in this village, all beings, both two-legged and four-legged, may flourish and live free from disease.

That auspicious and benevolent form of yours, O Rudra, is the healer of the entire world. With that most benevolent form of yours, grant us happiness and long life.

May Rudra’s weapons avoid us, and may his fierce anger turn away from us. Protect us, O Rudra, and bless our children and our descendants with happiness and well-being.

O Rudra, most generous and auspicious one, be kind to us. In the highest tree, place your weapon aside, and come to us, wearing your tiger skin, carrying your Pināka bow, and bestow your grace upon us.

O Rudra, the scatterer of enemies, red-hued one, salutations to you, O blessed lord. May your thousand weapons strike down our enemies, but spare us.

Your arms hold thousands upon thousands of weapons (sahasrāṇi sahasradhā bāhuvostava hētayaḥ) — O Bhagavān, master of them all (tāsām īśānaḥ), turn them away from us — let their terrible force face away and be directed elsewhere (parāchīnā mukhā kṛdhi)!

Countless in their thousands are the Rudras upon the earth; their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

Those beings that are in this great ocean and in the mid-air — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

The blue-necked, the white-throated Rudras who have gone up to heaven — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

The blue-necked, the white-throated Śarvas who move below upon the earth — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

Those in the trees, tawny-bright, blue-necked and deep red — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

Those who are the overlords of beings, without tuft, with braided hair — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

Those who guard the ways along the roads, bearers of sustenance, fighters for life — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

Those who move about the fords, with spears in hand and quivers slung — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

Those who strike at men among their food and at their drinking vessels — their bows we unstring a thousand leagues away.

These Rudras, both vast and numerous, have spread out across all directions.

Salutation be to the Rudras who are in heaven, whose arrows are the rain: to them ten toward the east, ten toward the south, ten toward the west, ten toward the north, ten upward. To them be salutation. May they protect us; may they be gracious to us. Him whom we hate, and him who hates us — him we deliver into your jaws.

Salutation be to the Rudras who are in the mid-air, whose arrows are the wind: to them ten toward the east, ten toward the south, ten toward the west, ten toward the north, ten upward. To them be salutation. May they protect us; may they be gracious to us. Him whom we hate, and him who hates us — him we deliver into your jaws.

Salutation be to the Rudras who are upon the earth, whose arrows are food: to them ten toward the east, ten toward the south, ten toward the west, ten toward the north, ten upward. To them be salutation. May they protect us; may they be gracious to us. Him whom we hate, and him who hates us — him we deliver into your jaws.

Thus the fifth chapter in the Rudra.

Chapter Six — the Mahacchiras, the praise of Soma, and the Tryambaka offering.

Hariḥ Om. O Soma, holding your observance and bearing your powers within our bodies, may we be united with offspring.

This, O Rudra, is your portion, together with your sister Ambikā; accept it — svāhā. This, O Rudra, is your portion; the mole is your creature.

We have besought Rudra, the god Tryambaka: that he may make us more prosperous, that he may make us better, that he may set us free.

You are the healing — healing for the cow, for the horse, healing for man; and ease for the ram and for the ewe.

We worship the three-eyed lord (Tryambaka), fragrant and nourishing, who increases our vitality. Like a cucumber detaches from its vine, may we be freed from the bonds of death, but not from immortality.

This, O Rudra, is your sustenance; with it pass beyond the Mūjavats. With your bow unstrung, the Pināka laid by, clad in the hide, doing no harm and gracious — pass beyond.

The threefold life of Jamadagni, the threefold life of Kaśyapa; that threefold life which is among the gods — may that threefold life be ours.

Auspicious is your name; the axe is your father. Salutation be to you; do me no harm. I turn you back — for life, for food, for offspring, for increase of wealth, for good progeny, for valour.

Thus the sixth chapter in the Rudra.

Chapter Seven — the Jaṭādhyāya. Hariḥ Om. The terrible and the fearsome, the dark and the roaring; the overpowering, the assailing, and the scatterer — svāhā.

Agni with the heart; the thunderbolt with the tip of the heart; Paśupati with the whole heart; Bhava with the liver; Śarva with the kidneys; Īśāna with wrath; Mahādeva with the inner ribs; the terrible god with the entrails.

The terrible one with blood; Mitra with good observance; Rudra with ill observance; Indra with sport; the Maruts with strength; the Sādhyas with delight. To Bhava what belongs to the throat; to Rudra the inner side; to Mahādeva the liver.

To the hairs, svāhā; to the hairs, svāhā. To the skin, svāhā; to the skin, svāhā. To the blood, svāhā; to the blood, svāhā. To the fat, svāhā; to the fat, svāhā. To the flesh, svāhā; to the flesh, svāhā. To the sinews, svāhā; to the sinews, svāhā. To the bones, svāhā; to the bones, svāhā. To the marrow, svāhā; to the marrow, svāhā. To the seed, svāhā. To the lower breath, svāhā.

To exertion, svāhā; to great exertion, svāhā; to joint exertion, svāhā; to varied exertion, svāhā; to upward exertion, svāhā. To the sorrowing, svāhā; to him who grieves, svāhā; to him who is grieving, svāhā; to grief, svāhā.

To austerity, svāhā; to him who is heated, svāhā; to him undergoing heat, svāhā; to the heated, svāhā; to the hot offering, svāhā. To expiation, svāhā; to atonement, svāhā; to healing, svāhā.

To Yama, svāhā; to the ender, svāhā; to death, svāhā; to the holy power, svāhā; to the slaying of a brahmin, svāhā. To all the gods, svāhā; to heaven and earth, svāhā.

Thus the seventh chapter in the Rudra.

Chapter Eight — the Chamaka Praśna.

Hariḥ Om. And food, and impulse, and effort, and pursuit, and thought, and resolve, and voice, and verse, and renown, and what is heard, and light, and the heavenly world — may these be secured for me through the sacrifice.

And vigour, and might, and self, and body, and shelter, and armour, and limbs, and bones, and joints, and frame, and length of days, and old age — may these be secured for me through the sacrifice.
